Commemorating Mandela Day with kids the healthy way

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) in partnership with Nestlé South Africa will on 26 July 2017 host the Mandela Day commemoration through the Nestlé Healthy Kids and the Nutrition Education programmes at Makeneng Primary School in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State Province.

Makeneng Primary School was nominated by the province for good performance and was also awarded 3rd position nationally for the implementation of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP). The Mandela Day celebrations will therefore include the official handover of the NSNP award prizes.

The DBE has since 2013 partnered with Nestlé South Africa on this project and the National Nutrition Week across the country. The programme provides in-class learner support and also facilitates workshops for educators and school food handlers.

Learners will engage in a Chef’s Demonstration to teach learners about the various methods of selecting and preparing different food groups. The programme also features a complete physical activity programme, which includes boot camp exercises, Zumba dance, hula hoop, skipping rope, indigenous games, soccer, netball and cricket.

Mandela Day is celebrated annually in honour of former state president Nelson Mandela. To participate in this global commemoration, people are encouraged to use 67 minutes of their time to make a difference and contribute meaningfully to their communities
