Nestlé South Africa keeps Madiba’s dream alive

Back to Press releases

On 21 July 2014, for the second year running, Nestlé South Africa and the Department of Basic Education hosted the Young Chefs’ competition at Mmatso Primary School in New Eersterus, Hammanskraal, in celebration of International Mandela Day. Over 1000 learners participated in various sporting codes and in an interactive educational Industrial Theatre show tailored to promote physical and nutrition education.

The aim of the show was to instil a culture of good eating habits – portion control and a balanced diet in a fun and creative manner that is easy and memorable for learners. Selected grade 6 and 7 learners also participated in the Young Chefs’ competition, where they learnt how to prepare a healthy lunchbox by following the concept of growing their own fruit and vegetables, shopping for healthier ingredients, eating the right food portions and the importance of recycling.

With assistance from our volunteers, learners participated in various sporting codes and indigenous games such as, Morabaraba (Checkers), Ditopo (Spinning Top), Marbles, Elastics to promote physical activity at school. The Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme roadshows have been extended to eight more schools in the Tshwane North District, with an estimated reach of over 4000 learners.
