Nestlé Community Nutrition Awards celebrates 20th anniversary

Nestlé South Africa will on 28 October 2013 announce the winners of the 20th Nestlé Community Nutrition Awards at a ceremony held at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. The company will also officially invite entries for the 2014 awards.

Since 1993, Nestlé South Africa has hosted the Nestlé Community Nutrition Awards following a need to recognise and reward efforts by rural women who work tirelessly towards improving the nutritional status of their communities by establishing food gardens.

Nestlé also introduced the school’s category in 2009 to further encourage school going children to take part in the broader national food security and poverty alleviation drive.

The company, in collaboration with Provincial Departments of Agriculture, has made a significant contribution to the awards which have managed to create a number of self-reliant women who have cultivated their food gardens from very small establishments to projects that have ensured food security for their families and communities.

More than 100 women have won and received financial reward for their efforts since the inception of this competition

The Nestlé Community Nutrition Awards project addresses rural development, nutrition and water issues, which are fundamental pillars of Nestlé’s Creating Shared Value (CSV) business approach.  CSV states that for a business to be successful in the long term, it needs to create value for the communities where it operates.

Nestlé South Africa’s Ravi Pillay says: “We are proud to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Nestlé Community Nutrition Awards and are motivated by the achievements of the many community projects and schools that have taken part in this annual competition. Although, latest United Nations figures indicate a downward trend in global hunger, we realise that there is still a need to put more effort in totally achieving this goal. At Nestlé South Africa we believe that community and school food gardens, especially those run by women, are some of the best methods that can be used to address hunger and poverty in previously disadvantaged societies.”
