Nestlé Kenya renews its Sh5 million MILO sponsorship for Primary Schools’ ball games

  • This is the eighth consecutive year for  MILO sponsorship of the National Finals of the Kenya Primary School Ball Games and Gymnastics
  • In the last eight years, about 20,000 pupils have been impacted by the sponsorship making it one of the biggest public-private partnership in the country –geared on nurturing young talents in sports
  • In addition to the Shs. 5million sponsorship, Nestlé Kenya will serve MILO drink in the four days of the tournament to the over 1200 pupils and 300 officials in Eldoret.

Nestlé Kenya has renewed its Sh5million MILO sponsorship for the National Finals of the Kenya Primary Schools’ Ball Games and Gymnastics for the 8th consecutive year.

The national finals of the ball games will take place in Uasin Gishu County at Wareng and Hill High Schools in Eldoret from 12th to 16th April, 2016.

Nestlé, the global leader in Nutrition Health and Wellness announced that the sponsorship will go towards providing sports kits for participating teams, track suits, tshirts, balls, trophies, medals and certificates.

“I am pleased to announce KShs.5 Million MILO support for the 2016 Primary Schools’ ball games for the eighth year in a row,” said Ms. Ciru Miring’u, the Head of Nestlé East Africa and Managing Director of Nestlé Kenya. “Through the MILO partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association (KPSSA), we seek to nurture young sporting talents. We aim to teach positive values, shaping our children to become the well-grounded adults,” she added.

Over the last eight years, Nestlé Kenya has helped impact lives of about twenty thousand pupils making it one of the biggest public-private sector partnerships that is geared towards nurturing young talents in sports.

“Previously, Nestlé Kenya has sponsored a total of 56 young boys from Kenya who attended the 2014, 2011 and 2010 MILO African Soccer Championships held in Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa respectively. These students have now joined some of the leading secondary schools and Universities in the country and still pursuing their talent in football,” said Ms. Miring’u.

In addition to the sponsorship, Nestlé will also serve MILO drink to the 1200 pupils and 300 officials expected to join the competitions in Eldoret.

Speaking while announcing the sponsorship at Ministry of Education offices, the Director General Mrs. Leah Rotich said, “I commend Nestlé Kenya for this esteemed partnership that has helped identify and promote sporting talents from the grass roots to the national level.”

Mrs. Rotich also added that her Ministry’s ultimate vision is to expose students to both curriculum and co-curricular activities like sports allowing them to develop holistically. “We want the students to think for themselves, solve problems and enjoy learning while preparing for various career paths,” she added.

The national finals are a representation of the top schools from the regions across Kenya previously known as provinces. Nairobi will participate as the Metropolitan region, Nyanza as Lake region, Rift Valley as Nakuru region, Coast as Mombasa region, Central as Aberdares region, Western as Nzoia region, North Eastern as Garissa region and the old Eastern Province as Northern region.

Last year, Nzoia Region beat 2014 title holders Lake Region to win the overall MILO trophy. Nzoia will also be defending their soccer titles for both boys and girls and Hand Ball titles for boys and girls.

Mau Region will be defending both the boys’ and girls’ volley ball plus Netball boys’ titles. Lake Region will be defending their Netball girls’ title while Highlands Region will be defending their boys and girls Gymnastic titles won in 2015.

The Ministry of Education said it had increased the number of days of the the competition from three to four to minimize fatique from the students.
